Sonic Youth In Search Of Stolen Gear

Sonic Youth is reaching out to fans following the theft of a rental truck full of the band's equipment this weekend.

Saturday night, a Ryder truck packed with all of the band's gear was stolen from its parking spot outside of a Ramada Inn in Orange County, California. As a result of the theft, the seminal noise rockers saw the July 4 show, dubbed "This Ain't No Picnic," tabled and may face similar fates for shows this week in Austin, Texas and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

For a band whose signature sound is built upon the eccentricities of its customized instruments, the theft provides a major setback. As guitarist Lee Ranaldo summarized through a spokesperson, "We have had a f**ked up situation come down on us."

However, the band is hopeful that the one-of-a-kind nature of the instruments will give the group a better chance to find them.

"Our guitars are all mostly older and either very modified and/or f**ked up/beat up," Ranaldo said. "They are unmistakably ours."

"Help

us out if you can," Ranaldo urged. "There will be a reward for any info, I'm sure. All our road cases, etc, are fully marked up with our name on them, the gtrs (sic) are so unusual that they won't really be too hard to mistake. ANY info at all will be appreciated."

Anyone with information about the potential whereabouts of the stolen gear is encouraged to contact Aaron Blitzstein at 212.343.2314, or via e-mail at Mascaras66@aol.com.

"Please no pranks," Ranaldo said. "This is really serious--all the gear we've used to write our last few LPs worth of stuff, instruments used for songs old and new which if truly lost will mean those songs will be lost forever."

Here's Ranaldo's list of some of the stolen gear that the band is looking for:
