Rowdy Black Crowes Club Show Ends In Stabbing

The Black Crowes, known to cop a move or lick from the vintage-era Stones, had their own non-fatal Altamont moment at a concert in Tucson, Arizona on Friday night, when one of the venue's security guards was stabbed in the arm.

The guard, Jason J. Thanig, received only minor injuries during the incident, which occurred when he was trying to bounce several members of the rowdy Rialto Theater audience, according to the "Arizona Daily Star.

The stabbing capped off a contentious evening for the band, which has been on the road for the past six months, touring clubs in an effort to build a grassroots support for its new album, "By Your Side," which is due out on January 12.

The weekend edition of the "Daily Star" reported that the Rialto show was stopped several times by rowdy fans and that the Crowes came close to halting the show and when lead singer Chris Robinson was hit with a plastic bottle thrown from the audience. According to a spokesperson for the Crowes, the

band did cut their set short, but only by a few songs.

In comparison, during the Rolling Stones' tour-ending free show at the Altamont Speedway in late 1969, an audience-goer brandishing a pistol was stabbed by a member of the Hell's Angels, who were acting as security for the event. The incident was immortalized in the Maysles brothers' classic documentary film, "Gimme Shelter.

The Black Crowes wrap up its Sho' Nuff Tour tonight with the second performance of a two-night stand at the Roxy Theater in Los Angeles. The first single, "Kicking My Heart Around," from the band's forthcoming album, is out to radio now and has already landed in Billboard's Top 10 Modern Rock chart.
