Ravi Coltrane Jumps Into Jazz Top 20

Saxophonist's From the Round Box debuts at #19; singer/pianist Diana Krall's latest still holds top spot.

Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, son of the late legend John Coltrane, sees his new album, From the Round Box, debuting on Billboard's Top Jazz albums chart this week at #19.

Coltrane's June release is his second effort as a bandleader since his work with Elvin Jones' band in the early 1990s. The album costars trumpeter Ralph Alessi, bassist James Genus, drummer Eric Harland and pianists Geri Allen and Andy Milne. One highlight of the collection is Coltrane's rendition of the Wayne Shorter tune "Blues à la Carte" (RealAudio excerpt).

On the rest of the chart, singer/pianist Diana Krall's When I Look in Your Eyes refuses to budge from the top spot. The $1.98 BET on Jazz Presents: For the Love of Jazz (#2) and 32 Jazz's theme album Jazz for the Quiet Times (#3) hold on to their respective positions, followed by pianist David Benoit's Here's to You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years! (#4), the soundtrack to Woody Allen's movie "Sweet and Lowdown" (#5) and Krall's reissued Stepping Out.

While Medeski Martin & Wood's Tonic (#7) trades places with Harry Connick Jr.'s Come by Me (#8) to move up one spot, singer Rosemary Clooney and guitarist John Pizzarelli's new album, Brazil, skyrockets up eight positions to #9. Trumpeter Roy Hargrove's Moment to Moment rounds out the group at #10.

Making a major drop on the chart this week is Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers' Everybody's Talkin' 'Bout Miss Thing! The March release moves down 13 positions to #25.

On Billboard's Contemporary Jazz albums chart, Won't You Let Me Love You — the new release from saxophonist and Berklee College of Music professor Walter Beasley — premieres at #4 this week. Saxophonist Boney James and trumpeter Rick Braun's Shake It Up (#1), guitarist George Benson's Absolute Benson (#2) and saxophonist Dave Koz's The Dance (#3) all maintain their respective positions from last week.

Acoustic Alchemy's The Beautiful Game moves down one slot to #5, trailed by Kenny G's Classics in the Key of G (#6), Al Jarreau's Tomorrow Today (#7) and James' Body Language (#8). The Higher Octave compilation disc Smooth Grooves Volume 2 enters the top 10 at #9, with singer/pianist Keiko Matsui's Whisper From the Mirror moving down two notches to #10.
