Sunny Day Real Estate Reunite To Cut LP

Nearly three years after disbanding despite their loyal following and noted influence in major rock circles, Seattle grunge pop legends Sunny Day Real Estate have decided to reunite for a third full-length album, according to their Sub Pop Records label.

"The initial impetus for the band to start playing together again came when the band got together for the odds and ends compilation," said Cece Stelljes, a spokesperson at Sub Pop. "Then once they all got in the same room together, they were really happy with the sound and the vibe that was going on."

The band apparently got along well during the sessions, for which they planned to write three or four new songs, and decided to go ahead and do a complete album of new material, she added.

While SDRE were popular in some circles, including among some of the big name grunge acts of the time, including Nirvana, members of the original lineup

gained most of their prominence through post-SDRE projects. Bassist Nate

Mendel and drummer Will Goldsmith went on to join fellow Seattle resident

David Grohl with the Foo Fighters, though Goldsmith was replaced by

former Alanis Morissette drummer Taylor Hawkins in June.

Lead singer Jeremy Enigk released Return Of The Frog Queen to critical acclaim last August, while guitarist Dan Boerner chose a quieter post rock 'n'

roll lifestyle: farm life with his new wife and dog in rural Washington state.

SDRE formed in Seattle in 1992, releasing two albums, 1994's Diary and

a self-titled album in 1995. Before their second release hit stores, the group disbanded, reportedly at the behest of Enigk, who went into seclusion and discovered Christianity before releasing Frog Queen. Unlike SDRE's guitar-driven pop, Enigk's solo debut featured a 21-piece orchestra, which he took on the road last year in opening slots for Soul Coughing and Sub Pop roster mates Sebadoh.

"When Jeremy (Enigk) was on tour for his solo album (Return of the Frog Queen), he was constantly asked if there was any unreleased Sunny Day Real Estate Material. This, together with the thriving e-mail lists started the idea for Odds and Ends," Stelljes said.

According to Sub Pop, the band decided to release an Odds and Ends

collection earlier this year, and after agreeing to record four new tracks

for the compilation, decided to go for the gusto and release an entirely

new LP instead.

The album should be released by next spring, though the band hasn't yet decided whether they will tour to support it. SDRE is also undecided on whether they'll record again after next spring's release. "With Nate (Mendel) in the Foo Fighters, and Jeremy still wanting to do his solo project, they have to work around these schedules. They don't want to commit to a tour or anything further than just the album," Stelljes said.

In the meantime, Sub Pop also reports that Mendel will remain as a full-time member of the Foo Fighters, while Enigk is "anxious" to record a follow-up to his solo debut.
