J.K. Rowling didn't just create the world of witchcraft and wizardry that we've all wished we could live in (my owl from Hogwarts is just late, I tell you! LATE!). Over the years she's also become an outspoken advocate of tolerance and acceptance, most notably for the LGBT community -- and ESPECIALLY on her Twitter page, where she's got no problems telling a poor misguided nerd what's up.

Explaining Dumbledore's Sexual Orientation

Of course, we couldn't start praising J.K.'s acceptance of the LGBT community without talking about that time she outed Dumbledore back in 2007. When a fan asked her if Dumbledore had ever fallen in love himself during a question and answer session at a Colorado High School, Rowling replied that he had -- with another man.

"In fact, recently I was in a script read-through for the sixth film," she told the audience back then, "And they had Dumbledore saying a line to Harry early in the script saying, 'I knew a girl once, whose hair...' I had to write a little note in the margin and slide it along to the scriptwriter, 'Dumbledore's gay!'"

Doubling Down On Dumbledore

After the media went nuts over Dumbledore's big outing, J.K. Rowling was surprised by those who were upset over his sexual orientation.

“It has certainly never been news to me that a brave and brilliant man could love other men," she told a press conference in Toronto later that year. Attagirl, Jo!

Talkin' Smack About Anti-Gay Lobbyists

“Once u revealed Dumbledore was homosexual I stopped being a fan," a Twitter user told Rowling. "Nice how u blindsided us with that one. Enjoy your billion $ (sic)."

Her response requires a bit of explanation: Brian Souter is a Scottish businessman who once funded a campaign to stop the repeal of a local anti-gay amendment. This amendment, which finally did kick the bucket back in 2000, forbade public officials from “intentionally promot[ing] homosexuality" and calling it a "pretended family relationship”. So, you know, some real bush-league bigoted stuff.

Defending Dumbledore

When a fan tweeted at the author, “Thank you so much for writing Harry Potter. I wonder why you said that Dumbledore is a gay because I can’t see him in that way,” she replied with the following snappy comeback and hopefully blew this girl's mind wide open with possibilities.

Hogwarts Is LGBT Friendly

We really don't get to see much of Hogwarts outside of Harry, Ron and Hermione's small Gryffindor-centric world, but make no mistake: Hogwarts is not a place devoid of different ethnic groups, sexual orientations, or religious identities. Not that fans haven't been writing some amazing slice-of-life Hogwarts fanfiction from that exact perspective, but now at least they can all say they have J.K.'s blessing.

Challenging The Westboro Baptist Church

First, Rowling wasn't so much "showing support" as she was pointing out an irrevocable fact: Gandalf and Dumbledore WOULD be super cute together and should totally get married in Ireland now that it's officially legal. But when the Westboro Baptist Church, she came back at them pretty bluntly. Like, REALLY bluntly. Dang, girl.

And Then Doubling Down Again

Here J.K. Rowling demonstrates an important aspect to being a true ally -- having the courage to call out bad or bigoted behavior when you see it, even if it's coming from a place you think doesn't necessarily deserve your attention. That's definitely something we all should be doing more.
