Haylie Duff Signs On To Broadway Version Of 'Hairspray'

Starting July 18, Hilary's older sister will play stuck-up archenemy of musical's main character.

Good thing Haylie Duff got plenty of practice playing stuck-up Summer in "Napoleon Dynamite" -- she's going to need it when she makes her Broadway debut in "Hairspray."

Hilary's older sister will play Amber von Tussle, the archenemy of the musical's main character, Tracy Turnblad, the show's producers confirmed Monday (June 12). Haylie joins the production at New York's Neil Simon Theatre starting July 18, for eight performances a week (Tuesday-Sunday, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday). And on opening night, Haylie can expect at least one friendly face in the audience -- Hilary, who wrote in her blog, "I can't wait. I will be there ... with bells on."

Starting September 8, Haylie will overlap with "American Idol" runner-up Diana DeGarmo, who will reprise her role as Turnblad's best friend, Penny Pingleton.

"Hairspray" -- based on the 1988 John Waters cult-classic film that featured Ricki Lake as Tracy and Vitamin C singer Colleen Fitzpatrick as Amber -- has won eight Tonys, including Best Musical. Set in Baltimore in 1962, "Hairspray" follows Tracy as she wins a spot on a local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show," and becomes an overnight teen sensation all while trying to fight race and size discrimination, win the cool guy and beat her beautiful rival. Amber doesn't make it easy, since she insults Tracy at every turn, asking her, "Aren't you a little fat for the show?," and dedicating the song "Cooties" to her.

"Hairspray" is also being made into a movie again, with filming slated to begin this September. While the part of Amber hasn't been announced yet for the movie version, Brittany Snow ("American Dreams") is in negotiations for the part. John Travolta, Queen Latifah and Amanda Bynes have already joined the cast.

Meanwhile, Haylie's next movie will be "Material Girls" with Hilary (see [article id="1503671"]"Duff Sisters Living Large In 'Material' World"[/article]).
