Drew Barrymore Is Your 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards Host

Try not to ‘Scream’

UPDATE (5/5/23, 10:00 a.m. ET): Drew Barrymore is no longer hosting the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. She will return to host the ceremony in 2024. The original article is below.

Ghostface might have taken Manhattan. But the iconic Scream franchise horror villain may book a flight out west when he hears this news: Drew Barrymore — actress, icon, scream queen, and notable first-ever Ghostface victim — is hosting the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. I wonder what her favorite scary movie is? (It might be M3GAN, honestly.)

MTV revealed the news today (March 15), and Barrymore released a hilarious clip baked into her talk show that finds her embodying both M3GAN and even doing a bit with Ghostface. There will be plenty more where that came from when the awards show airs from Los Angeles’ Barker Hangar on Sunday, May 7 beginning at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

“I am so honored to have been chosen,” she said in the clip, “especially this year, when the show is all about the fans. I’m a fan!”

Barrymore has taken home three Golden Popcorn statues in the past: one for Best Kiss in The Wedding Singer, and two for Best On-Screen Team in Charlie’s Angels and 50 First Dates. She’s also been nominated nine times, which makes her a regular, and in 2020, Barrymore and Adam Sandler were also honored as Dynamic Duo at the MTV Awards: Greatest of All Time ceremony.

The show returns to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar this year, and look, I’m not saying it’s haunted, but it’s also a cavernous event space where — theoretically — any shadowy figure could lie in wait for an appropriately timed jump scare. It could be Cocaine Bear. It could really be anyone. Spooky!

More details about the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, including nominees, presenters, and more, will be arriving in the coming weeks.
