I am the mother of two Type 1 diabetics, aged 8 and 5. It is an autoimmune disease. In T1, the immune system attacks the insulin producing cell's in the Pancreas and basically "kills" them. They cannot be made by the body again. This typically happens in early childhood and that's why it used to be referred to as "Juvenile Diabetes". Once all of the islet cells are destroyed, a person is diabetic and must take synthetic insulin every time he eats in order TO SURVIVE.
i couldn't stand the pregnant girl through this episode.. the doctors and nutritionist were telling her the negative things that could happen if she didn't get her sugars under control and fix her eating habits, yet she continued eating badly and all those bad things happened then she would cry about it. if you can't fix it for yourself you need to at least during the pregnancy for the baby.. also, matt needs to get it together and needs new friends

However, type 2 is probably what you're thinking of, since it is linked with diet and lifestyle in some cases . Both can be managed with medicine. However, type 2 diabetes is the only one that can be cured in some situations with a healthier lifestyle.
