And there's no discrimination: Metallers get onstage with pop groups and vice versa, the artists say. (7.15.08)
Portland is a great town, especially for vegetarians, but the music scene here is dying. It's over saturated with musicians. Most of the clubs and venues do little or nothing to promote the bands and they also get the bands to play for free or Pay to Play. 99% of the bands can't make any money here. Most of the bands want to sound all the same, but there are some cool young bands like SHE'S NOT DEAD that have their own sound! www.myspace.com/shesnotdeadmusic
OH GOD! Please don't move here and **** us up like you did to Seattle! It's already happening at an accelerated pace, **** "Keep Portland Weird", I wanna keep rent down, KEEP PORTLAND CHEAP! And it's hard to get a job in this town if you don't know anybody, jobs are scarce, even before the new depression started they were scarce, now they're even scarcer. There's only so many barista jobs and tend-bar jobs to go around. I was BORN HERE and I can't getta job. Move to Vancouver, Wa, they'll love you there. Oh, and 90% of the bands here are overrated. The Portland Mercury journalists just like to toss salads. Every show I go to I'm disgusted with the complete mediocrity of the music. It makes me VOMIT! Danava and the Hunches are decent, but MEERCAZ is KING (unfortunately they broke up about a year ago.)
awesome.
I couldn’t help but cringe - just a little after watching the video, thinking that the image and perception they convey looks a lot more like the Portland Mercury’s vision of the Portland music scene, than what it actually is. I mean, you can see for yourself and will hopefully reach your own, independent conclusions…but largely, MTV’s video footage of Portland portrays it more like a bunch of dirty, post-emo, experimental punk bands, including some very eclectic (maybe artsy - thats arguable), extremely niche stuff. A couple of exceptions include M. Ward (She and Him) and the more folky, Horse Feathers. But seriously… My experience with Portland is much broader and much more accessible than most of the video clips MTV includes here. Apparently, they were aiming to confirm the good ‘ol “Keep Portland Weird” bumper stickers...which my best bud Mikey will tell you was stolen from Santa Cruz anyhow. Highlights include pointing out that Portland has a good job market for baristas and bartenders and that it’s the perfect city for slackers. And in the end, I must whole-heartedly agree…EVERYONE IN PORTLAND IS IN A BAND. In any event, it's good press for PDX. All news is good news, right? http://www.petmarmoset.net/blog
Portlanders love to talk about Portland. Sometimes I think we (Portlanders) are a bit narcissistic when it comes to our beer, music, organic food, greenery, politics, bike-friendliness, laid-backness, etc. I've written a small blog about this: http://beerandscifi.com/2008/07/people-in-portland-love-to-talk-about-portland/
