First off, please consider this: Mexican is not a race. It is a culture. There are paternalistic, self-righteous jerks in every culture, but it has become a stereotype about males in the Mexican culture. Jo has developed those stereotypical attitudes early in life and seems to see women in a limited and limiting role. Kail is not a victim, I don't think she had the luxury of a real childhood. Kail and Jo are so different it would probably take years for them to understand one another - if that ever happens. Jo may end up being successful in his own way but Kail will truly earn whatever success she has while Jo's seems to have been mostly handed to him.
I think that the sole admirable person in Jo's family is his mom. Jo is immature, self-centered and superficial. Kail on the other hand has a mom like my stepmom and probably had to be an adult while still a young child. Jo insisted on meeting Jordan and Jordan clearly had Isaac's well being in mind, plus I think was/is sincerely Kail's friend. From what I have seen of Jo he just sees Kail like my ex-husband viewed me - someone generic to replace like a box of Tide from Wal-Mart. Kail deserves better than Jo and Jo needs to realize his son is not just his accessory.
