If this kid TRIED i bet he could learn to read and write. He seemed capable of it when he tried reading the text. This just doesn't sound right. Shame on his parents and teachers for not helping him and encouraging him to read!

HOW can you NOT read or write?! I feel like his parents never pushed him to even learn! THAT IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM!! I mean I know it's a disability but if he pushed and tried he could probably learn some basic skills. BLIND kids can read and write why can't he? He seems smart enough. OMG how do you LIVE like that? What does he do in school all day?!
His parents or something probably read the texts to him, but MTV probably did this scene for dramatic value. Anyway, I can't see his inability to read being an easy secret to keep...I wonder how he managed to keep it, and what disability makes his lack of reading ability so bad that nobody bothered to make sure he knows how to read.

I love the part where he gets a text from a girl he likes and gets frustrated because 'I don't know, I can't read!' (around 21:45ish) Did he somehow forget when he signed up for the texting plan on his cell phone? My wife and I couldn't stop laughing. What I learned from the episode was if you can't read don't get the "unlimited texting" plan.
i think there wasn't any dialogue because he can't read or write, so how is he suppose to write dialogue when he can't do that? And from the beginning, the made coach said that the film's images tell the story, so words are unnecessary to express the emotions.
I don't know what his detailed situation is but his parents seem rich, why can't they hire good special ed specialist to teach tommy? There are so many dedicated teachers out there to help him read and write. I think he needed this made opportunity to boost his confidence.
