This week, we're speaking with Adrienne Bailon, who first grabbed the attention of MTV viewers when her girl-group trio, 3LW, took-over TRL with the video for their hit single "No More (Baby I'ma Do Right) back in the fall of 2000. Adrienne, who was only 16 at the time, learned what she knew about fashion from growing up in a Latino neighborhood on New York City's Lower East Side. In the "No More" video she definitely looks like a girl from the block, clad in R&B/Hip-Hop inspired gear - belly shirts, two-toned bleached jeans and big hoop earrings. These styles that may look pretty heinous now, but were perfectly acceptable at the time. This was during the heyday of the teen pop explosion, and after releasing a platinum selling first album titled 3LW, Adrienne and her girls soon hit the road on the MTV TRL Tour 2001 with Destiny's Child, Nelly, Eve, and Jessica Simpson. The group released a few more hit singles, and a second album, A Girl Can Mack, before disbanding a few years later. By this time in 2003 Adrienne, bandmate Kiely Williams, and Sabrina Bryan had moved to LA to become the wildly successful Disney pop group, The Cheetah Girls.
Now that Adrienne was a tween pop star with a huge Disney franchise, releasing a wealth of films, records, and merchandise and going on tour to perform for millions of adoring fans, there was a lot more riding on making sure her image was just right. Adrienne's looks were safer than her looks during 3LW - no cleavage, for starters, and she always had to be wearing cheetah paw-print clothes. That can get a little tiring for a girl who's trying to figure out her own sense of style and how to be unique.
But Adrienne was never opposed to experimenting when she'd hit the town at red carpet events. To this day she happily puts together pieces that she says "don't go together" and enjoys dressing up and learning about which labels go with her style, height, body type and hairstyle. She also likely learned a lot about fashion from her friend Kim Kardashian, who's brother Robert Adrienne had a very public relationship with on the E! reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
When Cheetah Girls parted ways in 2008, Adrienne decided to return to her home town - New York City, and so the LA Melrose Place blonde look had to go - it was time for a sexy NY makeover. Her hair went dark brown and more mature looking, and her sense of fashion had clearly evolved. Now Adrienne hosts MTV Sunblock each afternoon and is preparing to release her first solo record on Island Def Jam. Now that she's calling the shots, it'll be exciting to see what outfits she's gonna hit us with next!
