How do I participate in MTV’s 24/7 chat?
You must register with the site and create a username that you can use every time you come back to our chat rooms. To chat, just log in and chat away.

How do I chat?
Once you are in the room, type what you want to say in the text box and hit "send." Everyone in the chat room will see everything you have typed once you send it.

You can send private messages that are viewed only by one other chatter in the room by either double clicking on a username or by highlighting a username and clicking the private message button. A dialog box will appear where you can type a private message that will be seen only on the other user’s chat window and will appear in red.

If you do not wish to view what another user is saying, you can choose to ignore him or her either by double-clicking on the username or highlighting it and clicking "user options." A dialog box will appear where you can check "ignore user." This will have no effect on the chat other than filtering out a particular user's text from your chat window.

Is WebTV compatible with MTV chat rooms?
Sorry, but WebTV is NOT compatible with our chat rooms, as WebTV's Web browser does not support java. We apologize for the inconvenience.

I can’t access the chat rooms; the screen is blank.
If you are having problems using the chat rooms, send us an e-mail, and be sure to include the following information:

  • Full e-mail address, username and password of the account in question
  • Which chat room you were trying to access
  • Browser name and version (E.g. Internet Explorer 5.0, Netscape 4.7, etc.)
  • Operating System (E.g. Win98, Mac, etc.)
  • Name of your Internet Service Provider (E.g. AOL, WebTV, Earthlink, etc.)
  • A complete description of the problem, including when the problem began and how often it occurs (rarely/often/all the time)
  • If you received an error message, please copy & paste it into your e-mail.
  • When accessing your account from another computer, does the issue persist?
The more information you provide us with, the faster we’ll be able to fix the problem and get you back on track.

How can I find out about live chats, and other live events on MTV.com before they occur?
Keep coming back to MTV.com. We try to let you know as early as possible about upcoming events. On our homepage, we have “Boards” and “Sweepstakes” areas to keep you informed on contests and upcoming events.

Can I get a transcript from a past chat event?
Transcripts for artist chats are found on the individual artist's Bands A-Z page. For instance, if you're looking for an Alice Cooper chat, you'll find a link that says "MTV Interview and Chat" on the left-hand side of his Bands A-Z page. Transcripts are usually posted within 3 days of the actual chat.

For event chats related to MTV programming, please check that show's website. If you were looking for the Party Chat Transcript from the MTV20 Birthday Bash, you would go to the MTV20: Live and Almost Legal website.

For 24/7 chat rooms, we do not keep transcripts.
