Things are looking up for The Prom Kings when Geffen Records expresses interest in the band. In a meeting, label president Ron Fair tells Greg, Chris and Whitman that he wants The Prom Kings to record a single for Geffen's consideration. Although Chris leaves the meeting ecstatic, there is one problem. Whitman, longtime friend and the band's only producer to date, is too green to cut these tracks.
To make matters worse, Whitman's love life isn't going too smoothly, either. Dogged by
his crew for sticking with Shayne even though she's been hanging out with an ex-boyfriend, he finally decides to take some of Greg's advice. When he meets her for lunch Whitman tells Shayne that he wants out of the relationship because he can't trust her.
Matt Baker, the actor within the cabal, attends the premiere of his movie Surf School with all of the guys in tow for support. Upon seeing the movie, Matt realizes that he has a lot more work to do to become a good actor and to ready himself for his next opportunity.
Still reeling from the good Prom King news, Chris sets out from the premiere to do some serious partying. He succeeds, resulting in a disturbing phone call to Greg in the middle of the night when he finds himself unable to get home.
Days later, The Prom Kings record their new single with a big name record producer. After the session, all anyone can do is wait to find out if it is good enough to land a record deal. When Greg gets the call from Ron Fair, they find out that it is good enough and the band is offered a deal to sign with Geffen. Not only does the news leave Chris speechless, it shakes him up enough that he immediately -- literally, immediately-- seeks help for his drinking problem.
