True Life: I'm Living Off the Grid follows two young people, fearful of the effect that modern society has had on the environment, as they embark on an intense journey into "native" living.

By enrolling in the year-long Teaching Drum Outdoor School, Ginny and Derik are forsaking all technology-including electricity and plumbing-and must learn how to survive using only what they can find in the forest.

As they learn to make fire without matches, build their own shelter, and gather and trap their own food in the wild, they find that the challenges of the primitive lifestyle can be overwhelming. Will they be able to make it through the program - or will the luxuries and conveniences of civilized life prove too difficult to escape?
