Justina Valentine has proven she's a clever, quick-witted lyricist, a songwriter with a knack for a memorable hook and irresistible chorus and a video performer with an audacious fashion sense. Once you've seen her, you won't forget her; once you've heard her, you'll never mistake her voice for anybody else's. On her steady climb to mass recognition, she's picked up new fans and new abilities with each release. Every time she comes out with a new song, she shows off a new skill. With the hypnotic "Muse," she demonstrated that she could be a sultry, seductive singer. With the sassy "All the Way" -- a track that features the acclaimed Arizona emcee Futuristic -- she showed off her dexterous rapping. What makes Justina grind so hard? Start with where she's from: Passaic County, a fast-moving, multiethnic area in northern New Jersey. People from that neck of the woods learn to be resourceful, and while it might not be the biggest market in the nation, there are diamonds hidden in those Jersey streets. America has just recently woken up to the talent in the 973 area code: Fetty Wap, another resident, became a chart-topping sensation in 2014 while staying true to his home base. Fetty graces Justina's salacious "Candy Land" (a song that isn't exactly about board games) with his distinctive vocals. "Candy Land," "All the Way," "Muse" and eight other irresistible tracks are all on "Scarlet Letter," Justina's debut album, a sizzling amalgam of hip hop, R & B, soul, electro-pop and east coast attitude that seems sure to make Justina a star. "Scarlet Letter" feels like the perfect soundtrack to this moment in popular culture: It's down and dirty but never unwelcoming, it's confessional but never glib, it's artfully damaged, colorful, wonderfully weird and sometimes downright funny, too. Yes, Justina and her collaborators have captured something filthy, thrilling and essential about life in 2016.Justina supported the release of "Scarlet Letter" on the 30-city Hate Us Cause They Ain't Us tour, electrifying crowds with her kinetic stage show. Alas, that tour is now over -- and if you missed it, you missed an artist that prides herself in putting the "show" back into "show business" -- for the moment, anyway; but you're certain to have an opportunity to see her out on the road again soon. She's going to keep doing what she does best: grinding, challenging herself and bringing her music to her fast-growing audience. We wouldn't expect anything less from a talented, hard-working, smart-mouthed superstar-in-the-making.Justina stars on Nick Cannon's "Wild 'N Out." Her music has also been heard on MTV's "True Life" and the VH1 reality series "Mob Wives." Other shows that have licensed her songs include "Running Russell Simmons," Logo's "The A-List: New York" and Steven Spielberg's NBC hit "Smash." Her energy, her versatility and the sexy insouciance of her songs and her personality make her a natural fit for television.
