In the '90s, MTV released a string of shows that, although short-lived, became quick cult classics. Not only did shows like 'Beavis & Butthead' and 'The State' inspire nation-wide petitions and astronomical DVD sales, but they also launched the careers of some of today's most influential entertainers. That end-of-century flash of inspiration is still alive today in contemporary pop culture standards like 'King Of The Hill,' 'Office Space,' 'Wet Hot American Summer' and 'Role Models,' not to mention the countless subversive sketch comedy knockoffs that followed.
The time has finally come to give into the overwhelming demand and bring those cult classics back from the dead. MTV2 LEGIT showcases groundbreaking talents from shows that defined MTV in the 1990's like 'Beavis & Butthead,' 'Celebrity Deathmatch,' 'The State' and clips from Liquid Television including 'Aeon Flux' and 'The Maxx.'
In case your memory needs refreshing, 'The Maxx' is psychedelic superhero story that takes place in a fantasy world called 'The Outback,' complete with spirit animals, cannibalistic bad guys and... social workers? Yup.
Animated series 'Aeon Flux' pre-dates the Anime craze, but employs many of the same techniques. A stoic superheroine, wrapped in scant bondage gear, leads the avant garde action. The famous opening credits show her catching a fly in her eyelashes. 'Aeon Flux' inspired a movie starring Charlize Theron.
'The State,' 'Beavis & Butthead' and 'Celebrity Deathmatch' are still household names. All three are sarcastically blunt satires that laugh at you as often as they laugh with you. It's easy to argue that their accessible brand of absurdism did a great deal to inspire the modern American sense of humor.
On top of all that, we have a whole decade's worth of music videos and on-air promos, including Denis Leary rants and awkward rides with Jimmy The Cab Driver. See where some of today's biggest names got their starts, when MTV2 LEGIT opens the MTV archive and delivers some of the network's most daring shows to a new generation of viewers. Dig out your flannels! The best of the '90s is back by popular demand!
