Ryan and Casey have been best friends for years. They've been there for each other through thick and thin, so it's a no-brainer for Ryan to ask Casey to be his future roomie.
At lunch, Ryan turns to Casey to talk about moving in when finds the right place, but Casey seems unsure about living with Ryan. He mumbles something about having to find a job, leaving Ryan concerned about his lack of enthusiasm.
Ryan stops by his father Randy's house to talk about the situation. Randy tells Ryan that having a roommate is serious business and suggests that Ryan approach the deal like a business transaction, lease and all. Ryan agrees, especially since he doesn't want to be taken advantage of.
Although Ryan lives in sunny San Clemente, Calif., it's feeling more like Splitsville these days. First, Ryan and his girlfriend Kayla went their separate ways. Then his father broke up with Christi. Now, Ryan is dealt another staggering blow...
After talking to his dad, Ryan heads to Taylor's house to discuss Casey moving in with him. But the conversation takes an unexpected turn when Taylor confesses that she and Casey broke up. Taylor pulled the plug because she was unhappy and wanted to do her own thing. Ryan is stunned by the news, especially since Casey didn't tell him.
Ryan realizes that the split is why Casey's been acting so strange. He seeks out Casey, finding him at the skate park. Ryan tries to get Casey to open up and talk about the breakup, but Casey refuses. After all the times Ryan has gone to Casey with his problems, it's upsetting that Casey won't come to him with something so important.
Leaving Casey alone, Ryan immediately drives to Tony's house to share the news. Ryan reveals that that he's starting to have second thoughts about Casey being his roommate -- he doesn't want to live with someone who can't communicate.
Ryan decides to talk his mother, Gretchen, about everything that's been going on. While she loves Casey like a son, she warns Ryan to be careful when choosing a roommate. The smallest thing can become a big problem when two people -- even best friends -- live together. Ryan takes his mom's warning seriously, especially since he and Casey have had arguments in the past.
Ryan realizes he wants to be there for Casey and help him work through the breakup, but he's not sure how to handle the situation. Ryan heads to Mitch's house for a quick chat. Ryan thinks Casey should move on, especially since Taylor already seems to be over Casey. But it's going to be a tall order because Casey and Taylor have the same circle of friends.
Hoping to lend a sympathetic ear, Ryan joins Casey on the beach and lets him know that he can always talk to Ryan about anything that's on his mind. Casey finally opens up and assures Ryan that he's OK with the whole breakup. But Ryan thinks there's still so much he's not saying.
Ryan realizes that although he and Casey have different ways of dealing with things, he still wants Casey to be his roommate. Knowing that Casey is going to have to pay rent even though he doesn't have a job, Ryan meets with his agent Steve to devise a plan where Casey would be paid to look after the new house. Casey would be responsible for dealing with things while Ryan travels.
Hoping that the new plan will help get Casey's mind off Taylor, Ryan visits Casey and offers up Steve's solution. Even though Casey is nervous about being a business partner with his best friend, he's ready to sign on the dotted line. With that settled, Ryan realizes that his friendship with Casey is stronger than any differences they might have.
