When seventeen-year-old Kashmiere slides her friend $400 worth of stolen goods from her job, the department store security catches her on camera. Although this isKashmiere's first offense as a shoplifter, she's no stranger to trouble -- she has recently been suspended from school for fighting with a teacher.
During her intake, Kashmiere is told to remove all her jewelry, including piercings on her belly button and nipples. When she refuses to take them out, she's told she'll have to stay in isolation. So, rather than stay alone in her room, she opts to have them painfully pulled out in the medical center.
In Juvie, Kashmiere quickly realizes that she's different from some of the other girls. While they are hoping for easy outs and G.E.D's, Kashmiere wants to put the jail food aside and work for her high school diploma.
Getting out of Juvie may, however, be a little more difficult than Kashmiere had hoped. Her mother can't guarantee she'll show at her court date, and their only phone conversation ends in an abrupt dial tone. When the court date finally arrives, her mother testifies against her, saying she's unsure of whether or not she can keep her daughter from running away. Because of this, the judge decides to hold Kashmiere in Juvie until she's allowed back in school.
Thirteen-year-old Frankie finds herself on yet another weekend trip to Juvie. No stranger to stealing, Frankie has racked up multiple theft charges, ranging from chickens and purses to church donations. After her last heist -- stealing $60 from a school fundraiser -- the judge sentenced her to three weekends in the Juvenile Detention Center.
After spending some last moments with her family, Frankie's dad drives her to the center. Although she hopes her stint will help keep her in check, she admits to reveling in the rush she gets from stealing. With two more weekend trips to go, Frankie plans on making new friends and improving her relationship with her family.
