It has been two years since Chelsi celebrated her Super Sweet 16 with a Roman-themed toga party that made her a legend in her small New Hampshire town. Now, Chelsi is heading to college -- yet she still thinks she should be treated like a Greek goddess!
These days, Chelsi is so lazy that she never, ever lifts a finger at home -- her mother does her laundry, her grandmother does her hair and everyone else cleans up after her. She feels like she deserves to be pampered; besides, work is just plain boring. But mom and dad have had enough! They think it's time for Chelsi to learn that the world does not revolve around her. Plus, they think she needs some real life skills before she heads off to college ... or she just might have a meltdown when she gets there. Well, let the melting begin 'cause Chelsi is about to be Exiled!
Sick of her daughter's whiny ways, Chelsi's mother drops a bombshell: Chelsi is about to be dropped onto the frozen tundra of the Arctic Circle in Norway ... where she'll be living in a tent for a week!
After sobbing in disbelief, Chelsi heads to her room to pack. The only thing is, she has no idea what she's doing. Her mother has to help her pick out clothes and fold them. Talk about spoiled!
When Chelsi lands in Mehamn, Norway, she sees nothing but snow ... miles and miles of snow. And all she can think about is frostbite and freezing to death. When she gets out of the car, she is greeted by a girl named Maret, who is surrounded by her family and several snowmobiles.
After dragging her luggage through the snow, Chelsi is suited up in a reindeer-skin coat and told what lies ahead for her. She'll be herding a massive group of reindeer during their annual migration. If Maret and her family don't get the reindeer to a new feeding ground safely, their livelihood will be in jeopardy. The big question is: Will Chelsi get off her lazy butt and help make the migration across the icy tundra a success or will she just whine and cry her way across Norway?
Then Maret explains that she's actually from a large city in Norway, but each year she and her family crash in a tent for a week to prepare for the seasonal reindeer migration. Yes, Chelsi, Maret and the rest of the family will be sharing one tent and sleeping on the cold ground.
The next day, Chelsi must wake up early to help Maret build a fence to keep the reindeer in check. After getting all bundled up, she looks at herself in a mirror she brought and heads out into the snow. But it doesn't take long for Chelsi to start whining as Maret tells her what needs to be done.
When it comes time to eat, Chelsi and Maret go ice fishing. And, soon enough, Chelsi is whining once again about how "boring" the chore is. The more impatient she gets, the more she complains.
Then it's time for Chelsi to learn how to ride a snowmobile, which is crucial in herding the reindeer. She freaks out about getting on -- after all, prom is in a few weeks and she doesn't want to break a leg! After being shown the basics, Chelsi must drive up a hill to test out her new skills. But when she gets stuck in the snow, Chelsi breaks out the tears and winds up flailing around in the snow wishing she were back home.
The next day, Maret reveals that she is an only child, which means she is the only person who can carry on the family tradition of reindeer herding. Chelsi's father is a business owner, so she understands Maret's plight. In fact, the story makes Chelsi want to give her all during the upcoming migration. Besides, Maret and her family are really depending on her help.
On the big day, Chelsi hops on her snowmobile and follows Maret to the herd of reindeer ... hundreds and hundreds them! Chelsi herds like a pro, earning Maret's respect. That night, she shows Maret some pictures on her digital camera and the two girls get to know each other.
When the week comes to close, the tent is packed up and Chelsi is sent home. But first she invites Maret to visit her. Back in New Hampshire, Chelsi admits that being Exiled gave her a new appreciation for what she has -- especially her heated house!
