Maribel and Julio, both 18, fell in love after meeting in their high school gym class in Long Island, N.Y. When Maribel's family moved to Florida after her junior year, she couldn't stand being away from Julio ? so one day she packed her bags, left her family a note and ran away from home to go live with him! Maribel's parents are still furious and blame Julio for causing their daughter to throw away her college plans and her future. Now that the couple is Engaged and Underage, Maribel's parents refuse to come to the wedding.
Before the big day, Maribel calls her parents in a last-ditch attempt to get them to come to the wedding. Her father says he is too hurt by what she did to walk her down the aisle. But after some discussion, her parents decide that they will come to New York for Maribel's high school graduation, which is a few days before her wedding. But they won't be staying for the nuptials.
One day, while driving her friend home from school, Maribel stops to fill up her car with gas, but she only has $2. Her friend asks why her parents don't give her any money, and Maribel explains that after she ran away her parents cut her off financially. Her friend is shocked by the fact that Maribel ran away from home and gave up her chance to go to college to be with Julio.
The night Maribel's family arrives, she is scared to meet them and argues with Julio over how she's going to handle the situation. Julio and her father don't get along, and Julio doesn't understand why her dad won't accept the fact that they're getting married.
After much anticipation, Maribel sees her family for the first time in nine months. At dinner her father expresses his concerns about her getting married so young and the whole family lays on the guilt about the fact that she ran away from home. Then, surprisingly, Maribel's father shares the news that he's decided to come to the wedding and walk her down the aisle, despite the fact that he thinks Julio is holding her back from going to college and building a life for herself. Maribel's sister, Crystal, decides to stay and help Maribel with the wedding while Maribel's mother still refuses to come.
Meanwhile, things between Maribel's dad and Julio are awkward and tense at Maribel's graduation ceremony. But Maribel hopes that things will be different when her dad returns for the wedding. To help the process along, Maribel tells Julio that she wants him to talk to her father at the wedding and Julio begrudgingly agrees to make an effort. Julio says he hopes one day Maribel's father will see that he is the right choice for Maribel.
On the big day, Maribel gets a phone call from her mother, who gives Maribel her blessing to get married. Maribel's father is very emotional as he gives his daughter away and, after exchanging vows, Julio steps up and thanks Maribel's dad for coming. It looks like the family is finally coming together.
