After winning a fourth straight championship and losing four senior players to college, the Hoover Bucs have a lot to live up to. Despite a new crop of players, preseason polls rank the team #1 in the country, so Hoover spirit has soared to new heights.
When the game against John Curtis comes around, Hoover's slow start puts them behind by a touchdown. The Bucs may have been 4-0 going into this meeting, but a loss would knock them out of the National Championship run. After Ross gets sacked and John Curtis drives in another touchdown late in the fourth quarter, the 14 point deficit proves too great a comeback for the team to tackle.
Kissing their Nationals bid goodbye, the Bucs are forced to go back to the basics. While senior players Mark and Charlie dread the first day back to school after the loss, they know they have to move on to protect the State Championship title.
With a drop to #9 in the rankings, the team hits the field to prepare for the Homecoming game. Coach Propst pulls Ross aside, apologizing for leading him in the wrong direction during the game. Ross shares the blame for the loss, saying his confidence was shaken.
Meanwhile, Brittany and the other cheerleaders start decorating the school for Homecoming. Outside, Brittany commiserates with Ross' girlfriend, Elliot, over graduation and their uncertain futures with their long-term boyfriends. Brittany admits to already crying about the situation with Mark, and says she hopes to follow him to college.
At the Homecoming game against Minor, Hoover faces another rough start. Tied at the half, the Bucs head into the locker room where Coach Propst implores his team to turn up the passion. With a little motivation, Hoover comes out strong with a quick touchdown, but Minor answers with a 69-yard touchdown of their own. Luckily, Ross is quick to shake things up as he drives in a touchdown that seals a win for the Bucs.
After the victory, the boys suit up for the Homecoming dance. When Mark and Brittany head home, they spend some quality time on a porch swing, where she congratulates him on the win.
