"Fullmetal Alchemist" Vol. 9 (2005)

The anime series "Fullmetal Alchemist," already an enormous hit in Japan, has become something of an instant classic since arriving here in the States. It currently airs on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim and made quite an impact on DVD as well, becoming the top-selling anime series of 2005. The show is set in a world where magic has taken the place of technology, and the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, barely survive a failed attempt at using alchemy to bring their mother back to life. Edward, the elder Elric, lost his right arm and left leg in the magical mishap, but his sibling, Alphonse, lost his entire body and his soul now resides within a suit of ambulatory armor. The two scarred teens must now embark on a quest to locate their missing father and the fabled Philosopher's Stone, the only object which has enough power to restore them to their original bodies.

In addition to episodes 33-36 of the series, FUNimation Entertainment has included the following extras:
  • Clean open and closing animations
  • Production art
  • Trailers

"Last Holiday" (2006)

The story of a woman who is diagnosed with a terminal illness sounds like prime material for a romantic comedy, doesn't it? Director Wayne Wang ("Maid in Manhattan," "The Joy Luck Club") clearly thought so. In "Last Holiday," starring Queen Latifah as Georgia Byrd, a woman working in a gourmet supply shop has a crush on Sean (LL Cool J), but is too shy to do anything about it. Diagnosed with a deadly disease, and learning she has just three weeks to live, Georgia does what any sane person would — she cashes in her life savings and heads off on a crazy European adventure.

Paramount has included the following bonus extras:
  • "Last Holiday: Packing Light"
  • "Last Holiday: Last Look"
  • "Last Holiday: 23 Years in the Making"
  • Deleted scenes
  • Recipes from "Last Holiday"

"The Family Stone" (2005)

"Meeting the in-laws" flicks are a Hollywood staple, usually entailing a holiday dinner and/or wedding, hilariously mismatched families and everyone learning to accept and love each other before the final course is served. In writer/director Thomas Bezucha's latest entry in the genre, Sarah Jessica Parker plays Meredith, an uptight, straight-laced woman spending Thanksgiving with her fiancé, Everett (Dermot Mulroney), and his nutty tribe of a family (mom Diane Keaton, dad Craig T. Nelson, brother Luke Wilson and sister Rachel McAdams). Overwhelmed, Parker calls in her sister Julie (Claire Danes) for backup — and the real fun begins.

Fox Home Entertainment has included the following extras:
  • Commentary by Sarah Jessica Parker and Dermot Mulroney, director Thomas Bezucha, producer Michael London, editor Jeffrey Ford and production designer Jane Ann Stewart
  • Six deleted scenes
  • Casting session
  • Behind-the-scenes featurette
  • Gag reel
  • Easter eggs

"Hoodwinked" (2005)

We all know the elements (a little girl, her granny, a wolf and an axe) that comprise the traditional "Red Riding Hood" tale. But the animated film "Hoodwinked" goes all "Rashomon" on us and asks, "What if it happened differently?" While that Brothers Grimm-meets-Kurosawa approach of telling the same story from multiple perspectives might seem a bit high-concept, the writing/directing pair of brothers Cory and Todd Edwards pull it off nicely — "Hoodwinked" emerges as a clever family film in the tradition of "Shrek." The movie features a diverse voice cast including Anne Hathaway as Red, Glenn Close as Granny, James Belushi as the Woodsman and supporting vocal turns from Anthony Anderson, Xzibit, Chazz Palminteri and Andy Dick.

The Weinstein Company has included the following extras:
  • Five deleted and extended scenes
  • "Critters Have Feelings" music video
  • "How to Make an Animated Film" featurette
  • Filmmakers' commentary

"Delicatessen" (1991)

Long overdue on DVD, "Delicatessen" is French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet's debut feature and a must-have for fans of his later work ("Amélie," "A Very Long Engagement"). A pitch-black comedy, "Delicatessen" takes place in the near future, when buildings are crumbling and meat is scarce. Ex-clown Louison (Jeunet regular Dominique Pinon) thinks he's hit the jackpot when he takes a job as superintendent of a ramshackle apartment building above a thriving butcher shop. The catch: All those who have held the job have gone "missing." Can a romance with the butcher's daughter save his neck from the chopping block?

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has included the following extras:
  • Commentary by director Jean-Pierre Jeunet
  • "Fine-Cooked Meats: A Nod to 'Delicatessen' "
  • "The Archives of Jean-Pierre Jeunet"
  • Theatrical trailer

"A Streetcar Named Desire" Special Edition (1951)

Director Elia Kazan took a great Tennessee Williams play and turned it into a magnificent movie — but it was Marlon Brando's raw, volcanic performance as Stanley Kowalski that announced the arrival of a major, overnight movie star. In classic Williams fashion, cultures collide when Southern belle Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh) arrives in New Orleans to stay with her sister Stella (Kim Hunter) and Stella's husband, Stanley. Stanley's brutal, "low-class" behavior pushes Blanche's already fragile sanity to the breaking point, culminating in one of filmdom's great tragedies — and one of the most memorable final lines for any Hollywood character as Blanche breathlessly admits that she has "always depended on the kindness of strangers."

Warner Home Video has included the following extras on this two-disc set:
  • Commentary by Karl Malden and film historians Rudy Behlmer and Jeff Young
  • "A Streetcar on Broadway"
  • "A Streetcar in Hollywood"
  • "Censorship and Desire"
  • "An Actor Named Brando"
  • Marlon Brando's screen tests (including "Rebel Without a Cause")
  • "Elia Kazan: A Director's Journey"
  • Outtakes
