2009 Woodie Awards Summary
Pop quiz! The 2009 Woodie Awards hit New York City's Roseland Ballroom full force with a) bare legs, b) kegs or c) plenty of Solo cups in the hands of nominees, presenters and audience members? The answer is d) all of the above, and then some!
As expected, the evening started out with a spectacle. Best Video Woodie winners, Matt & Kim, rolled into Roseland on bikes and opened the show with their hit single "Lessons Learned." Unlike their winning video, the indie duo doesn't get naked, but their backup singers pay homage by stripping throughout their energetic performance until they were in their skivvies. That's how you start a party.
Once the clothes were cleared, Pete Wentz hit the stage where he shared a toast with the hyped crowd, possibly the H1N1 virus with an audience member and announced the start of the show.
From then on the night was full of as many unexpected hijinks. Never Shout Never accepted the Breaking Woodie with a simple "Power to the people" before exiting the stage and 30H!3 made jaws drop when they presented the Left Field Woodie to Tech N9ne dressed in two of Lady Gaga's outfits from the 2009 VMAs.
Speaking of left field, rapper Asher Roth stage dove into the frenzied audience after presenting Best Performing Woodie to Green Day. Even Pac Div got a little crazy at the mic, announcing their candidacy for mayor of the Woodies with a bevy of sign-holding beauties flanking them as they presented the Best Video award to Matt & Kim.
Presenters weren't the only ones to let loose on the stage. Passion Pit performed their electro singles 'Little Secrets' and 'The Reeling,' while Death Cab lit up the crowd with 'Meet Me on the Equinox' and their '03 hit 'Sound of Settling.' Rap duo Clipse also rocked the mic right when they performed a medley of 'Popular Demand' with special guest Cam'ron and then had hip-hop lovers on their feet (we saw you dancing, Asher Roth!) after Rick Ross joined them for a rendition of 'I'm Good.'
But the tricks weren't limited to the stage. P.O.S. enlisted a little audience participation. The lyricist asked a group of lucky fans to play the cup game while he flowed to the beat among the audience. Is there such a thing as too much fun?
Alas, all good things must come to an end. Leighton Meester and Cyndi Lauper presented the biggest and final award of the night, Woodie of the Year. The gossip girl and '80s rock legend accept the prize on behalf of Kings of Leon who couldn't make it, but the show didn't end on a sour note. The Dead Weather closed out the memorable spectacular with impassioned renditions of 'I Cut Like a Buffalo' and their Best Video Woodie-nominated track 'Treat Me Like Your Mother.'
