2011 Video Music Awards Summary
The Video Music Awards returned to the sun-drenched City of Angels for some good ol' Hollywood fun and a night packed with star wattage.
The show opened with Mother Monster - in full chain-smoking, booze slugging Jo Calderone mode -- riffing on "his" relationship with Lady Gaga before launching into a performance of "Yoü and I" with Queen guitarist Brian May.
Britney Spears took home the show's first award with a win for Best Pop Video. Britney also received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award after a troupe of pint-sized dancers paid tribute to some of her most iconic videos.
Leave it to Beyoncé to provide one of the most talked about and 'aww'-inducing moments of the evening. After her retro performance of "Love On Top" energized the house, she unbuttoned her sparkly blazer to reveal a burgeoning baby bump. Proud papa-to-be Jay-Z, who made a suprise appearance earlier in the night with Kanye West, beamed as the crowd went wild.
Justin Bieber and his pet snake "Johnson" took the stage to accept the Moonman for Best Male Video just before Chris Brown's high flying, rock infused "Yeah 3X" and "Beautiful People" medley.
Odd Future and the Beastie Boys of the future (aka Will Ferrell, Jack Black and Seth Rogen) worked their best dance moves on stage before presenting a Harajuku-clad Nicki Minaj with Best Hip Hop Video. Later, Tyler, The Creator gave an inspiring and bleep-worthy acceptance speech for Best New Artist.
After performing a simple yet flawless rendition of her latest hit "Someone Like You," Adele sang along in the crowd as Bruno Mars paid tribute to Amy Winehouse with an uplifting version of "Valerie."
Mega-nominee Katy Perry walked away with the biggest award of the night before Lil Wayne closed the show with a rhyme twisting medley of "How To Love" and "John."
It was a night filled with pop culture royalty, buzzworthy performances and stage diving rockers. One thing is for sure -- next year we'll be back for more!
