Aimee's Question and Answer:
What was your first exposure to surfing?
My Dad taught me to surf in Waikiki when I was young. We would randomly surf together.
What made you decide to try it?
I've grown up at the beach in Hawaii and once you've tried surfing, it's hard to stop. It's an addictive sport! The waves are beautiful and the rides are fun.
What was your first surfing experience like? How much salt water did you swallow?
My first surfing experience with my Dad at Waikiki was so much fun. He would talk me through each step and help me get up. I remember looking at his face and seeing the proudest dad in the world. I fell many times and swallowed a lot of water, but hey, that's how you learn!!!
Anyone else in your family surf? Does Mom shoot the curls?
My Dad is my total inspiration for surfing. He ripped it up wherever we went. My brother Myles is a shortboarder and he is an awesome surfer. He surpassed my skills a long time ago! My Mom has surfed Waikiki a few times and she did well.
Would you consider dating a guy who doesn't surf?
Well, my boyfriend Sean does, so I've been spoiled with having a best friend and fun surfing companion. So, probably not.
What else do you like besides surfing?
Flowers, my family, and the sun. I like to play tennis, paddle out to the Mokulua Islands outside my house and hang out there. I like to hang out with my boyfriend, Sean, and my friends Chloe, Janea, Amanda, Tiare, Emily, Kristen, Natale, and Lauron. I also love to eat at this noodle shop called Ezogiku with my boyfriend. I like to shop, travel, and see movies.
What are the most common misconceptions about surfers?
Surfers are stoners.
What do you like best about surfing?
The adrenaline rush when you're going down the line. The smooth, gliding feeling of your board. New challenges always ahead of you, the ocean, and meeting new people while out surfing.
Explain the difference between a "soul surfer" and a "competitive surfer." Which are you?
I found that on this trip I am a soul surfer. Being competitive is just not me. I'm in it for the fun and spontaneous extremity of soul surfing. Not the urge to be titled better than someone else. But at times you have to be competitive to catch some waves.
What do you want to get out of this competition? What is your ultimate goal?
New friends, constructive criticism, travel, and better surfing skills. My ultimate goal is to have fun.
Who do you listen to before you go surfing to pump you up? What's in your CD player now?
Nothing specific, just something upbeat and refreshing. No doubt - Beacon Street Collection is in my CD player right now! Super, good old-school CD!
What was your worst bail ever? What happened?
Worst Bail??? Like someone bailed out on me? Dunno.
What would the surf movie based on your life be called?
Hah! I have no idea.
