What are the qualities of a perfect mate in your opinion?
Honesty, someone that I can communicate easily with. Someone that can bring out the best in me, I hopefully will bring out the best in them. Someone that you can laugh with and have fun with, someone who is affectionate and caring, and someone who you can trust.
Explain what some of your responsibilities are in your position.
I'm the treasurer. Basically I take care of all the money, I balance our checking account, collect dues, make quarterly budgets, plan fundraisers, reimburse people for things they need money for. I sign all the checks, anything that has to do with money.
How do you balance the time you spend involved in sorority activities and the time required to study for your classes?
What time that I study? That's funny. I definitely always put Sigma before my classes, being on e-board is high priority. For the most part I try to get all the Sigma stuff done and then go to the school stuff. It's just a give and take.
What are some rules sisters have to abide by in order to be in/stay in the sorority?
There are no real set rules, but it would be nice if all the girls participate and have an active role in the sorority….Definitely attend all the mandatory events and all of the meetings. And pay dues--that is a rule, if you don't pay you're not in the sisterhood. All the girls put in their weight.
Will you stay involved in the sorority after you graduate and perhaps move away?
Definitely. I want to make sure that Sigma is around for years to come. Maybe become an advisor, because I want to see it continue on this campus and other campuses across the U.S.
Do you consider your sisters closer friends to you then your non-sorority friends?
Absolutely. All of my best friends are in the sorority because I've been in it since the first quarter of freshman year. I've met so many people though the sisterhood, because we spend so much time together, of course I'm going to make very good friends out of it.
Have you ever been faced with a difficult decision when choosing people to rush or ultimately be initiated into the sorority?
Absolutely. The beginning of this quarter was hard for us because we didn't know who we wanted to bid, who was being sincere and who was there for the right reasons. I personally have been really torn with what I want.
How do feel that having the MTV cameras around affected this semester's pledging experience?
I think it affected it 100%! The whole time we didn't know why the girls were rushing, if it was just to be on camera or actually [to] get to know us and rush our sorority. Also, we're worried as a sisterhood [about] how we'll look on TV rather then just let things go the way that we usually would. It definitely changed things for us this quarter.
How has being in a sorority changed your life?
It hasn't really changed my college life because I've always been in it in college. But it's definitely given me a large group of female friends. Before, I had a few close girlfriends. I definitely hang out more with girls then I do with guys, the opposite of high school. I've always been involved in sort of a group where there is a leadership opportunity, so in that sense it hasn't changed me. I guess it's just given me a lot more friends and the opportunity to take on bigger leadership opportunities then I would have otherwise.
