Mara's Post-Show Commentary

I think sigma is a great organization. I think the women in this sorority have built this organization entirely on their own, which is a feat in and of itself. When I met many of the girls from Sigma I was so impressed with their values, their understanding, their maturity, and their involvement in all aspects of campus life, not just the sorority. I felt these women were spiritual, caring, kind and trustworthy, but most of all I felt unity. It sounds cheesy, but those things were almost tangible for me in the beginning. Being an outsider and looking at these women with such virtue and understanding, who wouldn't want to be a part of that?

Sigma has provided a wonderful environment for its members. Obviously so many of them have taken so much from being a part of this organization, and thus they cherish it in a way outsiders will never understand. My decision not to become a part of Sigma in the end was just that, my decision. In looking back on the way that the pledges were treated by the organization as a whole, I know that I made the right decision for me. Sigma is the right place for a lot of people, but it was the wrong place for me. I thought I could just fit in, but I guess somewhere down the road I realized I didn't want to fit in, I wanted to be me!

Looking back, pledging was the experience of a lifetime. We laughed, we cried, we formed bonds that were broken and bonds that will hopefully last a long, long time. We had some amazing times along with some really hard ones. No, it wasn't fun all the time, but it wasn't miserable either. And the experiences and lessons I have learned from this time in my life are some that I will take with me forever. In the end, I think we will all be better people for having had this opportunity.

I want to thank Becca. She is one of the strongest most amazing pledge moms I could ever imagine or desire. She was great and constantly stood her ground! Girl, I cannot thank you enough!

All in all, I hope everyone is happy with how it turned out. The most important thing is feeling you made the right decision for yourself, and looking back, I know that I have. I hope everyone else is saying the same. I think MTV did a good job with the editing. It's been pretty accurate, except, contrary to popular belief, we do study and we do go to class! Not that you could tell that, but we do! I promise. And some of us even go to the library!!! Shocking, I know, but true. And, I really would have liked to see more of our Vegas trip--we had a blast!!!

As for me right now, well let's see. I am single, I get that question a lot. This summer I worked for Health and Human Services, doing grant review work for Healthy Start. Healthy Start is a grant program that provides money to underprivileged communities to assist them in developing health clinics for pregnant and parenting women. I learned a great deal about these services as well as the federal government. People recognize me all the time and I think it's really cool! Lots of people come up to me and stuff, I love hearing from fans! I am heading back to Davis at the end of September. Who knows what the upcoming year will bring?
