Quddus

Since being hired by MTV in May of 2001, Quddus has been one of the top VJ's for Total Request Live with the distinction of having been on-air longer than any other current VJ. He also hosts the TRL Weekend Countdown, a radio show that's syndicated in over 130 markets in the United States. He's often been a part of MTV's biggest event, the annual Video Music Awards and has also co-hosted MTV's Fashionably Loud, and their New Year's Eve Bash. Quddus is so renowned for his interviews that when multi-platinum selling artists Usher and Britney Spears did concert specials for Showtime, both of them specifically requested that he host the show. The widely-respected, Grammy-nominated rapper Common recently stated, "Quddus has helped keep TRL important to artists like me while giving it more credibility in the hip hop community." He's helped TRL's ratings remain strong while also bolstering the ratings of other shows. Brian Graden, President of Entertainment for MTV Networks Music Group, said, "Our audience is so responsive to him that since he's taken on hosting another show called Hits its ratings have notably increased."

Quddus' talent hasn't been the only reason for his success. TV Guide named him one of the 'Hottest New Stars' in 2005, USA Today included him among their 26 "Sizzling young hunks worth watching in 2004," and Teen People called him one of the "50 Sexiest Men Ever." Ebony also recently tapped his understanding of pop culture to explain Kanye West's influence but even though Quddus has the kind of notoriety that led to him to cameos on major network shows such as CBS's CSI: Miami (2003) he's more than simply a celebrity, Quddus is a true role model. He's mediated forums for AIDS awareness, spoken at summits to promote literacy, contributed to fundraising events, and recently helped Hurricane Katrina victims by building houses with Habitat for Humanity. Dr. Cornel West, professor at Princeton University and author of the highly acclaimed Race Matters, adds, "Quddus is a significant role model in the African American community. In a pop culture climate where rappers like 50 Cent perpetuate negativity and are the most prominent example of a black man, it is of the utmost importance that someone like Quddus be able to offset the stereotypical image. Quddus is at the forefront of the progress black people are making."
