MTV.com: How do you feel about being nominated for a Movie Award?
Ashton Kutcher: [laughs] I'm very, very flattered. It's nice being recognized for your work. I mean, I don't really--in the broad spectrum of film history, my performance isn't necessarily deserving of "breakout performance role"--but I'm very, very flattered.
MTV.com: So this is very unexpected for you?
Ashton: Very unexpected. I mean, I thought more that Best Kiss might be an option, but I really didn't expect this at all.
MTV.com: How do you feel about the competition you're up against?
Ashton: Who am I up against? [laughs] I know Hugh Jackman is nominated for X-Men, right? And he was really cool in that….I saw Almost Famous, and that was a really good movie. So I'm pretty excited for Patrick Fugit there. And who else is up for it?
MTV.com: Tom Green from Road Trip.
Ashton: Tom Green from Road Trip? Yeah, well, he was playing with the mice there, and that was really real-looking, so…[laughs] It's really, really cool, you know? It's exciting. It's all kind of brought in by the fans, and that's what's cool. That's why we make the movies--it's for the fans.
MTV.com: Tell me what you're working on right now. I know that you're filming in Vancouver.
Ashton: Yeah, I'm working on a movie called The Guest. My character is a guy named Tom Stansfield who's kind of like an insecure guy who ends up having to watch his boss' house for the evening. And people just kind of abuse him, and I feel like a pinball in the world, I get knocked around. So that's pretty much the character.
MTV.com: You have a couple other movies, right? Texas Rangers--can you tell me about that?
Ashton: It's a Western. Basically it takes place post-Civil War, when there's no law in the South. And all of the older men got killed in the Civil War, so all these young kids basically had to band up to fight against the Spanish militia and the bands from across the border from Mexico. And that's what that's about.
MTV.com: And who are you playing in that?
Ashton: I play a guy named George Durham. He's a guy that was on a cattle drive and everybody on the cattle drive got killed off, so basically he ultimately goes to fight because he's been glorified his entire life by everyone he knows…and he realizes that an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth isn't really justice, it's just more bloodshed really, so…
MTV.com: What's your all-time favorite movie and why?
Ashton: My all-time favorite movie is Shawshank Redemption. Just because I can watch it a million times and still be surprised that Andy Dufresne got out of his jail cell. I love it. It's one of the greatest third act twists of all time, I think. It's really amazing.
MTV.com: How will you celebrate if you win?
Ashton: I haven't even thought that far ahead. I'll probably celebrate by coming back up to Vancouver and finishing my movie. [laughs]
