Have you ever been drug around by your babysitting sister? While at the age of 10 I was drug to a concert featuring Metallica with Guns and Roses. At the time I had no idea who they were but then again all I cared about was not getting stomped on. Half way through the show a security guard, (my cousin), let us go backstage where I caught my first glimpse of my future. Lars was soaked to bone but playing harder and faster. He looked over and shot off a look, clinching his teeth and throwing his hair. From then on I knew I would be a drummer. As soon as we got home I was playing on paint cans and pizza boxes. At the same time my adoption was being finalized and the Judge said I could change my name. I had right away blurted, 'James Hetfield,' but we settled on just James. My parents never me hear the end of that one. As the years went on I saw Metallica three more times. Then in 2002 I was in a motorcycle accident that put me in the hospital for six months. After four surgeries and all the pain I was giving up, but in the back of my mind I remembered that look that Lars gave to the crowd. It was as though the pain was in the back of his mind because he was doing what he loved. From then on I decided to put all my pain in the back of my mind and pursue the things I love. Now I am 20 years old and slowly recovering little by little thanks to the drumming that started as just a passion, but is now rehabilitation. To me Metallica is not just a band that I look up to. They are a group of Gods that represent people like me. They set examples for both right and wrong. They give us hope.
