Chance Encounters with Aerosmith

Robin, 32

Oh my god, where do I begin? Studio TCB, Boston Massachusetts, October 1989. I'm nineteen with big hair and lots of make-up. I'm into Prince, Madonna and Lauper, but my boyfriend at the time owns this state of the art rehearsal studio, and this band called "Aerosmith" is there rehearsing for their European Tour of their new album, "Pump," and my bf is asking me if I want to hang out with them. Admittedly I'm not a fan. I'm into pop music and I've been living under a small town rock all my life. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS ABOUT TO EXPERIENCE. I was so awesified by the sheer sound of Steven's velvety voice and the magnitude of his lips--and the way you felt his presence immediately as he entered a room--that I found myself rendered speechless and shy. The rest of the band was great, down to earth, but Steven was like from another planet. I was then invited to the soundstage to listen to them play "What It Takes" (to this day my favorite song) and was at once--like literally overnight--a fan. Oh, but folks, THIS was not my best Aerosmith moment. That moment was six years in the making. I HAD NO IDEA their music was about to become the soundtrack of a bitter break-up between said boyfriend and I, followed by a breakdown. In the hospital we were allowed a radio and I listened to that "Pump" album over and over again, driving the already crazy, crazy! But it got me through. And when I got out, it got me on, you know? Now HERE'S the story. I start a dance company and we win a trophy in some small-time talent contest for our hip-hop rendition of "Walk This Way"--but it was the beginning of something special. As a fluke, one day in front of the video camera, with Aerosmith playing in the background, I start doing this Steven impersonation. And the girls start freestyling in the back, and we're like, we're on to something!! So we do this low-budget video and I send it to Steven's home address. Less than two months later, I run into him. He's coming out of this antique store in Cambridge and I'm coming out of dance class. And he sees me, and I know he recognizes me, but he can't place me. "Hey," I say. "Did you get my video?" Well…his face lights up and he smiles, then he takes my hand and looks me straight in the eye and he says, "Oh yeah I did, you're crazy!" And that he was so amused he called Joe up and had him come check it out. And I can't believe this is happening, because when I sent the video I remembered writing, "I know one day we're bound to cross paths again." I remind him of this as he gives me a kiss on the cheek and a hug goodbye and then says, "It's magic, isn't it?" THAT'S when I knew anything in life was possible.
