Survey Shows Hostile Environment for Gays and Lesbians in
American High Schools
August 27, 2001 -- A new survey, released by Hamilton College and
MTV, found that 88% of high school seniors say that anti-gay language is
used in their schools and half have witnessed classmates insult gay students
by calling them "faggot, homo, dyke" or a similar name. The survey was
conducted on 1,000 high school seniors and found that 87% claim their school
lacks an organization to support homosexual students. However, the survey
also found that young people are more accepting of gays and are more liberal
than adults on gay issues. 85% of seniors say that gays and lesbians should
be accepted by society, which may indicate that young people are poised for
a change.
MTV will continue its year-long Fight For Your Rights effort to Take a Stand
Against Discrimination by airing an episode of Flipped on September
3rd at 10:30 PM where a homophobic teen learns how harmful using words like
"faggot" are to the gay community.
