Shattering Wal-Mart's Glass Ceiling
Earlier this week, six female employees of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. initiated a class action lawsuit against the nation's largest private employer. The suit, filed in a U.S. District Court in San Francisco, charged the retailer (including Sam's Club Stores) with discriminating against female workers nationwide.
The complaint specifically noted that women were overlooked for training, pay increases, and promotions. And, that Wal-Mart retaliated against workers who complained about the alleged abuse. The company was also accused of having a sexually demeaning atmosphere.
Although women make up more than 72 percent Wal-Mart's American workforce (962,000 people), 90 percent of store managers are men. This case has the potential to be the biggest sex discrimination lawsuit ever, and 700,000 current and former employees could become part of the case.
