MissionTo raise consciousness in communities on racial justice and the impact of globalization; to work against oppression.
Personal Quote"I realized I had the power to create what I wanted to see in the world…The world I envision is worth the sacrifices necessary to get there."

What do you plan to study in school and how will it help you achieve your mission?
I plan on majoring in Fine Arts -- specializing in painting -- and Cultural Studies. Art is critical to the success of our movements and the success of any culture we hope to create. Art is one of my tools to change the world; one way I affirm myself and share my experiences and heart with others. I plan on using my education to explore the meaning of words that we all throw around, like freedom and justice.

Where will you be in five years?
I want to be an organizer for any number of issues, depending on what is most critical to the community in five years, and how my understanding of my role develops. I think that my first goal might be organizing long-term campaigns around systemic racism in public schools. If there isnŐt an organization doing exactly what I want to do, I will probably start an organization, or find a way to incorporate a new project into an existing organization.

Why should people care about social justice?
People do care about social justice; the only problem is that we have become so discouraged by the situation we live in, that many have lost hope that social justice is achievable. People have abandoned themselves to the notion that we live in a dog-eat-dog world, and you have to look out only for yourself. I believe we have to care about social justice in order to validate our own humanity. If our own existence is worth anything, then we must care about the situation of people all over the world; otherwise, we disrespect ourselves.

How are you going to change the world?
I am going to change the world by doing what I believe in. I believe in seeking the whole truth, not compromising people in the process, and not settling for superficial solutions. My goals are to challenge white privilege by sensitizing white Americans to racism, to relate how all forms of oppression work together to maintain a system that keeps most people oppressed, and to continue work with young women to recognize their strength and potential. I will incorporate art in every way we organize. If we break down the systems that oppress us, our culture and world will change.
