|Every time the Hopkins Academy pool was drained, junior cadets were subjected by the senior cadets to a "Loyalty Test." Standing in the empty pool basin, beneath a suspended bed of spikes, these young men would prove to all who witnessed that they were prepared to die for the honor of the Academy. In March 1964, a 15-year-old freshman's skull was crushed during this test. No witnesses ever testified to the accident and no suspects were prosecuted. Many cadets thought this was no accident, but rather the work of The Ranks carrying out the wishes of Captain Cochran.
