After Otto's death, Frederick Sr. fell into a deep depression and moved the entire family down into these caverns, taking them away from the rest of the world. The Boettgers had finally become true hermits. In these caverns, they had a theater, two pools, living area and a sleeping area. Since the death of the last surviving Boettger, Henry, the caverns have been closed.
