Pearl Jam

Even as a teenager I can honestly say this video scares the hell out of me. This is by far one of the most disturbing videos I have ever seen, but at the same time, I must give Eddie Vedder the praise he deserves for creating what is probably the only music video to ever stir my fears.

Jeremy, creepy? this is a true story, and how it may be controversial to some conservative censor, is beyond me. This story illustrates the reasons and death of Jeremy perfectly, and how the brutal and what jerks people can be. I think for a controversial video, this sucks. the message is plain, and you have to be a moron not to see it.

Dear MTV,

Pearl Jam's "Jeremy", more than any other video on this list, shows a truth. It is controversal, but who ever said controvery is bad? Less than ten years after the video was made came the Columbine shootings. "Jeremy" warns of such a thing. The fact that Pearl Jam has chosen not to appear in any of their videos prior to "Jeremy" shows how strongly they feel about this video. The video for "Jeremy" is a piece of art that should be shown to all.

Growing up in the big-hair nineties, I was glued to the set, in particular, MTV. Most of the videos aired at that time, besides Madonna rolling around grappling with her clothing, involved some pretty tame subjects..... party, party, rock and ROLLLLLL baby, etc. And then, one day, I turn the set on and there is Jeremy, (PJ) and it pretty much seemed a turning point in the industry, as well as for what I would see on the screen. I remember thinking, "Holy Crap. That kid just killed someone. Where's the girls in cages? Where's the long shot of the band in a fake arena? Well, no more big hair bands, that's for sure." And, for the most part, it rang true. Videos took on a more political way of expressing opinions, and songwriting went from "My girl wants to party all the time" to...well, Pearl Jam.
