While American rock bands were wary of video, British groups embraced the medium, altering the look--and sound--of pop on MTV. Duran Duran took advantage of this new form of exposure, taking a cinematic approach to producing stylish videos like "Girls On Film" and "Hungry Like the Wolf." Gender-bending Boy George and outrageous Cyndi Lauper changed the pop look even further, and managed to make a cultural impact as well. Their fearlessly flamboyant styles--orange hair, mismatching clothes, heavy makeup--widened the pop fan base, reaching out to teens who didn't fit into the mainstream. Their sound was as quirky as their look, from Cyndi's spastic "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" to Culture Club's sultry "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?"
