In the late '80s the dance pop revolution hit MTV. Janet Jackson set the standard with videos like "When I Think Of You" and "Nasty," while the dance show Club MTV, which debuted in 1987, paved the way for other pop stars like Taylor Dayne and Jody Watley. Paula Abdul stormed the 1989 VMAs with four awards and became MTV's Queen of Dance Pop. But scandals and speculation soon set off a pop backlash. Lip-synching accusations were everywhere, and Club MTV sensation Milli Vanilli went down in flames when they were exposed as lip-synching frauds who hadn't sang a note on their records or during shows. Producer-driven dance acts like C+C Music Factory and Technotronic were heavily criticized for featuring models who didn't sing, either. Pop soon lost its credibility, and the happy dance vibe gave way to other music genres on MTV.
