Pop wasn't just about style, image and catchy tunes--artists also had plenty of causes. Benefit concerts, from Live Aid to Farm Aid, raised money for everything from Ethiopia's famine victims to rural American organizations. These concerts brought together pop stars such as Madonna, Bryan Adams and Sting, while the Tibetan Freedom Concert continues to draw big names such as Dave Matthews Band, Beastie Boys, and R.E.M. Even single songs were dedicated to causes, such as Michael Jackson's "We Are the World," which rallied stars like Cyndi Lauper and Lionel Richie. And who could forget Elton John's touching version of "Candle in the Wind"--a tribute to the late Princess Di.
