When MTV throws a birthday party, the stars come out. We had spies everywhere--and here's just a sampling of what we saw, heard, and overheard going down.

Taking the Bus

Was that a bunch of junior high schoolers on a field trip to the 20th birthday bash? Nope, those were the boys of Sum 41. The baby-faced rockers shunned black limos and tinted windows and went old-school by arriving at the event in a little yellow school bus. Now that's stylin'.

Motorcycle Mama

Sum 41 weren't the only ones who ditched the ubiquitous black car. The tranquility of the red carpet was shattered when a deafening motorcycle pulled up behind a line of limos. The passengers? Joan Jett clinging firmly to actor/bodyguard/Hell's Angel Chuck Zito. The two were dressed for the part in black leather pants and jackets, but Joan removed her jacket with a flourish--revealing a skimpy "top" that consisted of two scraps of leather held together with chains made out of safety pins. Guess you're never too old to be a rock star.

All Sobered Up

MTV's favorite freaky former VJ, Jesse Camp, made a point of telling everyone at the party he was "clean and sober." And he sure was--despite his usual showy getup of red cowboy boots, armfuls of bangles, and white jacket with tails--Jesse was unusually subdued all evening. He spent most of his time standing in the back, glued to his demure-looking female companion, watching the action on stage. In fact, when Jane's Addiction was rocking the house, Jesse was staring at the band as if he'd never seen anything like them before. He did manage to perk up when exchanging hugs with fellow VJs Ray Munns and Ananda Lewis.

Stopping Traffic

P. Diddy arrived fashionably late just before the red carpet closed, then shocked everyone by running across a congested Manhattan street in midtown--dodging taxicabs and busses--to get a round of high-fives from enthusiastic fans lined up along barricades. He dashed through traffic again to take his stroll down the red carpet. At least drivers caught in gridlock had something to keep them entertained.
