COAST TO COAST
Hip-hop was now a household name. Though it was born in the East, its dominance had shifted to the West, with artists such as Dr. Dre introducing that West Coast G-funk sound. In light of this regional
shift, East Coast artists such as Notorious B.I.G stepped it up a notch to bring the sound back to its
birthplace. Emcees from the ranks of Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and 2Pac tossed words
over who was the "realest" to grip the mic. While these cats flaunted the hot cars, money and jewelry,
artists such as The Fugees, The Roots and other hip-hop artists managed to keep the music grounded at
its roots. This was the beginning of another side of the music.
