EARLY YEARS
Run-D.M.C. kicked down the door at MTV, introducing a new form of music that many simply dismissed as "noise." This music consisted of one mic, one emcee and a DJ. When "Sucker MCs" was brought to the masses, hip-hop "heads" had no idea what they were in for. Who knew what breakdancing was about? What was so important about graffiti artists tagging trains? Who knew the 16-year-old sensation KRS-One from Queens, NY, would not only become the first artist on the Def Jam label, but would lyrically challenge all emcees, from Kool Moe Dee to Ice-T? But it didn't stop there. Hip-hop had managed to make its way across the map, with artists such as N.W.A. in Los Angeles stirring up
controversy with their violent and shocking lyrics.
