Faces From The Front: See More U.S. Soldiers

What's up MTV!

I want to start off by saying thank you for all the love those of you who responded to my e-mail have shown me. It's really uplifting to know that there are Americans out there that support us and don't take their freedoms for granted. I was surprised to get so many e-mails from people who seem concerned and truly cared about the soldiers who are serving their country overseas. Once again, thanks for the support, and keep us in your prayers.

It's been a few weeks since the war started, and it's looking like it's heading toward an end now. The major battles are all but over, but we in the military know that the work is just beginning. Now we have to restore order and help the Iraqi people form a government that is run by the people for the people. And they deserve it! All those years under Saddam had them scared to speak in public. Can you even imagine what it would be like not to be able to say what you wanted, when you wanted? It's been that way in Iraq for almost 30 years! But not anymore — those days are over. I don't think anyone who was watching TV the other day will ever forget the celebrating in the streets that took place when the people in Iraq realized that Saddam wasn't going squeak by this time. And I can honestly say that I was a part of it.

As for me going home, I don't think that's coming anytime soon. I sure wish the time was close at hand, but it's not. I'm about to hit my six-month mark here, and I'm missing home more and more every day. It's funny how you take the little things for granted, like hanging with friends, going to see a movie or just kicking back with nothing to do on a Saturday morning. You realize how nice it is when you aren't able to do it. But that's part of the job, or should I say the way of life we chose. If we don't do it, who will?

Hello MTV,

My name is Mike. I’m an Army Sergeant currently deployed to Southwest Asia for Operation Iraqi Freedom. I’ve been in the Army for almost six years now. I've been here for four months, and have enjoyed every second of it. My job title is Information System Operator/Analyst. That’s Army lingo for "computer guy." I help maintain tactical data systems and keep the air war going strong. As you can imagine, it gets kind of crazy around here. Right before the war started was the worst. But it has slowed down a bit since it then.

I'm originally from Jacksonville, Florida, but my home station is Fort Carson, Colorado. I know what you’re thinking — that the desert must be a hell of a change from Colorado. And you would be right. It’s nothing but sand and flat land here. I was used to waking up and seeing Pike’s Peak first thing in the morning. Now all I see are sand storms and a few palm trees. But it’s something you get used to after time. I mean, it’s not like I have a choice. This place is not that bad to be honest. I’ve met some really cool people and we try to enjoy ourselves on what little free time we have. But I realize I have nothing to complain about. It could always be worse.

Well, as you all know, the war has started and is well under way. To tell the truth, I was excited and a little nervous. All the guessing and predictions were over at that point, so I guess you can say it was sort of a relief. But I know we could handle anything that comes our way. Our military is constantly training hard, and the American people can be proud of us, knowing that we are always ready to defend them. Even if some don’t agree with the cause, we still defend their right to disagree.

As for me, I hope to return home soon. My next move will be to Fort Meade, Maryland. I’m really looking forward to getting there and seeing old friends. That’s one good thing about being in the military. You get to travel and you meet some real cool people, many of whom become your friends for life. The down side is being deployed to a place so far from home like this. Sometimes I miss my family and friends. But it’s part of the job. And I know I will see them again soon, so I don’t sweat it. I want to say to my family: sorry I haven’t called, but it’s been kind of busy. I love you all and I’ll be home soon. Keep me in your prayers, and I’ll do the same.

Mike
