Jerry Jeff Walker made his reputation as a Texas musical outlaw with a song he wrote about a wino and a dead dog "Mr.Bojangles" and a song Ray Wylie Hubbard wrote about ... outlaws: "Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother."
These are sure to be part of the gypsy songman's repertoire as he and his Gonzo Compadres make their way from Boston to Ireland to Lubbock, Texas, for tour dates this summer. "Remember, we only do memorable things," Walker said of a schedule that also will include appearances in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Virginia's acclaimed Birchmere Music Hall and Nashville hot spot the Exit/Inn.
Count on Walker also to showcase his gentler side with ballads such as the classic "Morning Song to Sally" and the Ian Tysonpenned "Navajo Rug."
To kick off the journey, Walker reunites with Guy Clark at the Sun Valley club in Victoria, Texas, on May18. It's been several years since the two icons have shared a stage. Clark wrote several of Walker's hits, including "Desperados Waiting for a Train" (RealAudio excerpt), "Boats to Build" and "L.A. Freeway" (RealAudio excerpt).
With Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Michael Martin Murphey, Walker and Clark pioneered the Texas music mix that became progressive country and redneck rock, and influenced the next generation of Texas singer/songwriters, including Lyle Lovett, Townes Van Zandt and Nanci Griffith.
Walker, also known for his annual weekend-long birthday bash he turned 59 in March most recently issued a collection of re-recordings of material from his 30-album career and an autobiography, both titled "Gypsy Songman."
