After releasing A Great Big World's "Say Something" two weeks back, Lorde's kid sister India Yelich-O'Connor is receiving rave reviews on her SoundCloud account. Amongst those fans are A Great Big World themselves, Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino.
"It was awesome! You can hear a little bit of her, maybe she's influenced by her sister's sound a little bit," Ian told MTV News. "It was just so awesome that our music is a). connecting to people in New Zealand and b). it's Lorde's sister and Lorde's awesome. I wanted to meet her. We saw her perform and she is beyond her years. She is like, so wise, I can't believe she's, what is she, 17? I can't believe that."
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it's not just 15-year-old India fawning over the tune. Thousands of YouTube subscribers have tried their hand at the song, including Victoria Justice and the PS22 Chorus.
"To get a cover of a song is like the ultimate form of connection," Ian said. "We get goose bumps for the most part watching."
"The song moved you enough to want to learn how to play it," Chad chimed in. "Which is crazy."
While Chad doesn't remember the first time the band was covered, Ian says it's something he'll never forget.
"It was years, and years, and years, and years, and years [ago]. We're so old," he laughed. "It was a cover of an old song; it was a guy in France who did it on the piano. And it's just chilling, like every once in a while, if we have time, I'll look on YouTube and I'll sort by upload date, and I'll just look at the latest covers. I think it's the coolest thing."
