Pearl Jam: Lightning Bolt
Release Date: October 15
The word: "We had a blast and recorded some of the best songs we did," longtime producer Brendan O'Brien told Rolling Stone about the session that began in a three-week burst May 2011 and then stalled until last March. O'Brien said songs like "Siren" and "Infallible" are a bit long for pop tunes. But, like everything Eddie Vedder has written over the past two decades, they were tapped out on the singer's battered typewriter.
Hear this: First single, "Mind Your Manners," has PJ back in chugging punk-rock mode and the video from famed photographer Danny Clinch artfully mixes stock footage with live shots and old-school animation.
Key players: PJ once again teamed with O'Brien, who hopped back on board as producer for their 2009 return-to-form Backspacer after a decade away.
Fact: Guitarist Mike McCready has said some of the songs have a Pink Floyd vibe, while others are straight-up punk tunes. Among the 12 tracks on Bolt are: "Swallowed Whole," "Future Days, "Yellow Moon," "Let the Records Play" and "Getaway."
Pusha T : My Name is My Name
Release date: October 8
The word: "The album's finished, the album's amazing," Pusha told "RapFix Live" of his solo debut, which has seen a few pushbacks. "It's been a lot of talks of the pushbacks... but that's out of my control. And it don't matter because my dope don't spoil. I told y'all a long time ago that I'mma have the album of the year."
Hear this: Pusha's mic dominance is never up for debate and the G.O.O.D. Music dope dealer puts any doubt about his hitmaking ability to rest with "Sweet Serenade," his new Chris Brown-assisted single. The moody track doesn't betray Push's underground sound, but provides the right amount of melody for radio.
Key players: We're not sure how many beats Kanye West will have on MNIMN, but you can bet that G.O.O.D. Music head honcho put his stamp on this long-awaited LP. Fans can also expect the-Dream, Kendrick Lamar, Rick Ross and actor Joaquin Phoenix to make contributions.
Facts: In the early incarnation of Pusha T's debut, Kanye West told the Clipse MC that his album reminded him of hell and he meant it as a compliment.
Rick Ross: Mastermind
Release date: TBA
The word: "It's not about status, it's not about finances; in this game staying #1 and staying on the top, it's about the art, it's about the culture, it's about the people," Rick Ross told MTV News of his state of mind going into Mastermind.
Hear this: Rozay's formula is tried and true and with Mastermind's first single, "No Games," he sticks to the script. Like "Hustlin'," "Hold Me Back," this first shot is aimed directly at the streets. Armed with a rambunctious chorus by Future and a frantic beat from the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, it's safe to say the MMG Boss isn't playing around.
Key players: Not much is known about Rozay's Mastermind, but we'd be surprised if we didn't get a few key MMG appearances from Meek Mill, Wale and French Montana.
Facts: Out of his five solo albums, Rick Ross has managed to notch four #1 debuts on the Billboard 200 album chart. We're not sure what the Bawse has in store for his sixth LP, but it'll be crazy to bet against him.
The Wanted: Word of Mouth
Release Date: September 17
The word: "Just listening to the tracks from our upcoming album... I really think it's the best we've done," Max George recently tweeted. "Can't wait for everyone to hear it! #proud"
Just listening to the tracks from our upcoming album... I really think it's the best we've done...Can't wait for everyone to hear it! #proud— Max George (@MaxTheWanted) September 3, 2013
Hear this: The Wanted released "I Found You" and "Walks like Rihanna" in anticipation of the album, but it's their track "We Own the Night" that truly stands out. The Wanted decided not to release a club-ready track like their hit, "Glad You Came," but still satisfied their fans by delivering a true party anthem. The catchy up-tempo track, released last month, is perfect for a sing-a-long at a local pub with friends, complete with "la la la" chanting and bagpipes.
Key players: The Wanted, who co-wrote several songs on their third album, teamed up with hitmaker Dr. Luke for "Walks Like Rihanna," frequent Justin Bieber collaborator, Nasri on "I Found You" and fellow British singer Rita Ora.
Fact: After working on the album for over two years, the boys suffered a setback while recording the album and filming their E! reality series, "The Wanted Life," when member Nathan Sykes had to undergo vocal cord surgery in April. Sykes has since made a full recovery, rejoining the band in June.
Rumors: At one point, the Wanted confirmed that their former tourmate, Justin Bieber would be making an appearance on Word of Mouth, but in an interview with Ryan Seacrest, manager Scooter Braun coyly shot down the rumors, saying they "just did some writing together." Fingers crossed Scooter was just trying to throw fans off!
The Weeknd: Kiss Land
Release date: September 10
The word: Though press shy Abel Tesfaye maintains an aura of mystery, he will share some personal experiences on his upcoming major label debut. "There's a lot of cool twists with this album, because this album symbolizes everything that I'd never experienced in the past 21 years of my life. From when I was born to when I was 21, I never left Toronto," he told Complex in a rare sit-down. "That's why I'm such a city cat. Trilogy is my experiences in those four walls. Kiss Land is me doing the things I did in Trilogy in different settings."
Hear this: Pharrell took the liberty of putting a spin on The Weeknd's original track "Wanderlust," and the remix will appear on Kiss Land.
Key players: Despite rumors of a rift between the two, Abel's biggest fan, Drake, will appear on "Live For."
Facts: The Weeknd came up with his album title after overhearing the words "Kiss Land" in a conversation.
Zendaya Coleman: Zendaya
Release Date: September 17
The word: "I have to be able to play my songs over and over and over again," Zendaya told MTV News. "I have to love them because if I don't love them, how can I expect anyone else to want to play it a 1,000 times and love it? So literally all my songs I will slap in my car when I'm rolling with my mom down the highway because I can't drive."
Hear this: The debut single, "Replay" showcases her impressive vocals over a polished up-tempo track that reveals maturity well beyond her age. The song will not only connect with her Disney audience [Zendaya starred on Disney's "Shake It Up"], but pop fans of all ages.
Key players: Zendaya recently signed with Hollywood Records [Selena Gomez, Lucy Hale] and revealed that she was very hands-on in the production process. She teamed up with former Disney star Nick Jonas, who produced the track, "Love You Forever." Zendaya also tapped production and songwriting team The Monsters and the Strangerz, who have worked on songs with Rihanna, Big Sean and Carly Rae Jepsen, for three songs on the album including "Butterflies."
Fact: One of Zendaya's biggest supporters is another former Disney star, labelmate Demi Lovato. Zendaya revealed to MTV News that Demi is like a big sister to her. "She was very supportive of me and she wanted to know if there is anything that I needed or if I needed someone to talk to, because she definitely went through what I'm dealing with," Zendaya said.
Rumors: Zendaya was hoping to get rappers A$AP Rocky and/or Big Sean to do a feature on the album, but so far, no word if the collaboration happened.
