Before the heroes of "Pacific Rim," Guillermo del Toro's upcoming robots-versus-monster epic, hop into their skyscraper-sized walking weapons, they have to prove themselves capable fighters on the ground. In this exclusive clip from "Pacific Rim," Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam of "Sons of Anarchy") faces off against his potential new partner, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), to see if she can hack it.
In "Pacific Rim," monsters, called kaiju, have begun to invade our world from another, through a portal that appeared deep in the Pacific Ocean. When the attacks kept coming, Earth decided to fight back, and that was the start of the Jaeger program.
Jaegers are massive robots piloted by two individuals whose minds have been melded to form a synchronicity. Finding a partner to pilot a Jaeger with can be a difficult process, and one of the best ways to do so is the kind of combat you see in the clip here. When del Toro sat down with MTV News for a trailer commentary, he explained the system.
"The pilots wear suits that are neurally linking them," del Toro said. "They have a spinal clamp that links their spines. They have relay gel in their helmets that transmit their impulses to one another. They move in synchronicity. One is handling the neural network of the left side of the Jaeger, and the other is handling the neural network of the right side of the Jaeger. They are connected between them."
Mako may have scored well in all of her simulator session, but that might not be enough to cut it as Raleigh's co-pilot for Gypsy Danger, the Jaeger used by kaiju fighters from the U.S.
Once inside, the heads of these massive Jaegers, pilots like Raleigh and Mako use the skills they learned on the ground to take down the enormous monsters that have been ravaging their coastlines.
"Pacific Rim" comes from the mind of director Guillermo and writer Travis Beacham and takes much of its inspiration from the Japanese giant monster movies from the 1960s and 1970s.
