MTV's Musical March Madness returns on Monday, March 18, when a field of 64 bands begin the quest to topple Tokio Hotel and claim the big gold trophy for their very own.
And while last year's MMM tournament set new records for fan participation (40 million votes!) and general insanity (Ke$ha did Kegels! the Black Keys bumped Beastdrol! Kermit the Frog inexplicably repped for Nickelback!), we've got every reason to believe that the 2013 tourney will be even better on both counts ... thanks in no small part to the recently reunited Fall Out Boy, who enter the fray for the first time.
See, when we started this thing back in 2010, Fall Out Boy were in the midst of their "hiatus," and therefor ineligible to compete in the tournament — though that didn't stop us from pitting Pete Wentz against Patrick Stump in the first round (Stump won, for the record). But, as you're probably aware, they've gotten back to the business of being a band, and this year, they're recharged and ready to make a run at the championship.
"We're going to win, because we're winners, obviously," frontman Patrick Stump sneered. "We're here to compete, that's really the most important thing. I think people miss that point."
"We're going to touchdown the most baskets, for sure," guitarist Joe Trohman added. "Kickball."
Clearly, FOB aren't lacking when it comes to confidence (the same can't be said for sports metaphors, unfortunately), but will that swagger carry over to the tournament itself? Can they shake off the rust and compete against MMM-tested acts like former champs Green Day, perennial powerhouses Paramore or underdogs-turned-tourney-favorites Fun.? It will be up to you to decide — fans vote on the winners in all March Madness matchups — but Fall Out Boy aren't sweating it; after all, they've already got one rather prominent fan in their corner.
"We're going to win this March Madness thing. I met [Green Bay Packers QB] Aaron Rodgers, and he's a big fan, so if we have his support, we'll win," drummer Andy Hurley said. "Aaron, let's hang out."
MTV's Musical March Madness Tournament begins Monday, March 18, when we'll unveil the full field of 64 bands that will battle for this year's championship. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act made the cut, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get ready, it's gonna be a war!
